Kyleena is a small, flexible, T-shaped intrauterine device (IUD) that is inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy for up to five years. As a long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC), it is highly effective and can be removed by a healthcare provider at any time if you wish to become pregnant

Kyleena works locally to prevent pregnancy

•  The local mechanism by which continuously released LNG contributes to contraceptive effectiveness of Kyleena has not been conclusively demonstrated

Studies of Kyleena and similar LNG IUS prototypes have suggested several mechanisms that prevent pregnancy:

• Thickening of cervical mucus preventing passage of sperm into the uterus
• Inhibition of sperm capacitation or survival
• Alteration of the endometrium
