How it works
The colpotomy tube, often part of a larger uterine manipulator device, is inserted vaginally and guided to the cervix. The end of the tube, known as a cup, serves several functions during the procedure: Identifies incision landmarks: It helps to clearly define the cervicovaginal junction, which is the line along which the incision (colpotomy) is made.
Protects surrounding structures: The tube displaces the bladder and retracts other tissues to protect them from injury during the incision.
Maintains surgical field: Its airtight valves prevent the loss of pneumoperitoneum, which is the insufflation of the abdomen with carbon dioxide to create a working space for the surgeon.

Surgical uses
The colpotomy tube is integral to several gynecological procedures: Hysterectomy: It is used to safely guide the incision that detaches the uterus from the vagina and provides a way to deliver the surgical specimen (the uterus).
Myomectomy: In laparoscopic surgery to remove uterine fibroids (myomas), a colpotomy-assisted technique uses the tube to facilitate the vaginal extraction of the fibroid.
Specimen removal: For various laparoscopic procedures, the tube can act as a conduit to extract specimens, such as cysts or other pelvic masses, through the vagina.
